Argan oil grows as the fruit of Argan trees. Historians believe that this miracle tree originated in a small village named Argana, in the country of Morocco. The fruit of the tree, once peeled of its outer shell, produces a nut that holds the oil. For centuries, the people of Morocco used the oil for healing and cosmetic advantages.
The nut of the argan tree consists of kernels, which are the source of argan oil. The Moroccans have been using argan oil as a skin moisturizer and hair treatment for centuries. There are records to say that they have been using it since 1550 B.C. An African explorer named Leo Africanus came across this tree when he was traveling across Morocco in 1510.
From there onward, the oil entered Europe where only the rich had access to the oil. Argan oil was a very expensive, rare and exotic oil during this time.
The Berbers of southwest Morocco have used Argan oil for centuries in a variety of ways. The Berber women of Southern Morocco are known for their exotic beauty. Their legendary beauty attracted scientists to the “rare oil” that these women have used as a cosmetic for centuries. Testing this oil, scientists discovered that it is full of rich antioxidants, rejuvenating Vitamin E and other agents that add glow, youth, and beauty to hair and nails.
The Berber women say that the secret to their beauty has been that they have grown up using this golden oil on their hair and face. They also believe that argan oil has amazing health benefits amongst its many other beneficial properties.
Pure Argan oil has been said to slow down the aging process as it contains very high levels of vitamin E and other anti-oxidants counteracting the free radicals which damage skin causing it to age.
Argan oil helps to renew skin cells and saponins soften the skin, plump it up and effectively work with the body’s own natural moisture barrier to reduce dryness. The natural plant sterols have anti-inflammatory properties which reduce skin redness and dryness. The excess fatty acids and vitamin E content of argan oil will help repair damaged skin and provide it with nutrients which will prevent further dryness and irritation.
